Join us for our third round of Screen Queens, with a screening of But I'm a Cheerleader
A satirical romantic comedy directed by Jamie Babbit, the story follows Megan, a seemingly perfect high school cheerleader played by Natasha Lyonne. Although she has a football-player boyfriend and fits the image of the "ideal" American teen, her family and friends become convinced she's a lesbian because she doesn't seem interested in boys and connects more with girls.
The movie mixes bright, exaggerated visuals and comedy with serious themes about identity, conformity, and the harm caused by conversion therapy. Over time, it became a cult classic in LGBTQ+ cinema because of its humor mixed with positive messages about self-acceptance.
Grab some popcorn (available at the bar) and pull up a seat for this 1999 movie that continues to sparkle in queer cinema history.
